The connecting rod is a long rod, which is stressed during operation. In order to prevent bending and deformation, the connecting rod must have sufficient stiffness. Because of this, most of the connecting rod shafts of automobile engines are made of I-shaped steel, which can minimize the mass with sufficient stiffness and strength. Some high-strength engines are made of H-shaped steel. Some engines use fuel injection from the small end of the connecting rod to cool the piston, so a through hole must be drilled longitudinally on the shaft. In order to avoid stress concentration, the connecting points of connecting rod shaft, small end and big end shall adopt large arc for smooth transition.

In order to reduce the vibration of the engine, the mass difference of each cylinder connecting rod must be limited to the minimum range. When the engine is assembled in the factory, it is generally measured in grams according to the mass of large and small connecting rods. The same set of connecting rods is used for the same engine.
On a V-type engine, the left and right rows of corresponding cylinders share a crank pin. The connecting rods include parallel connecting rods, fork shaped connecting rods, and main and auxiliary connecting rods. The two ends of the mechanism are hinged with the driving member and the driven member respectively to transmit motion and force.
